Maureen Hearty's art & community work
Prairie Futures, a Liberty Rural Learning Cooperatives project, is a public artwork and agricultural landscape installation which aims to establish and support community based conversations around farming in the Colorado High Plains.
As co-director for the Liberty Rural Learning Cooperative I organized an applied rural arts creative and journalistic writing workshop with local high school students. A collection of the students' writings were published in a zine insert with the Yuma Pioneer.
Dandelion Love is a picture book I made to share with the community at Smiley Branch Library to accompany 'A Life Cycle Story', the public art sculpture I installed there.
I helped design and build the Prairie Walk Park at Grassroots Community Center in Joes, CO. To get community involved, while adding a cultural design element, we built a cob wall sculpture. Follow the link to learn more.
I've worked with various communities using the garden as a community building tool, in addition to creating access to healthy food.
I worked with Denver Urban Gardens as a garden and nutrition educator, bringing garden and nutrition programs to urban food deserts. My husband and I made a little video about the Fairview Garden in west Denver, to see follow the link.
I built and installed a large loom in the garden where families gather to play through weaving with found objects.
I facilitated audio interviews with men who spent over 20 years in prison, here are their stories.
I do many creative workshops with schools and community groups. As an artist in residence at Roosevelt School in Lima, Peru I worked with their garbage to build a musical sculpture while leading classroom workshops.
Murals are a fun way to collaborate with diverse groups of people while activating space. I've facilitated many mural projects inside and out in urban and rural communities.
The Liberty Rural Learning Cooperative was founded to preserve and support the unique qualities found in rural education, arts and culture. We implement projects based on innovative community engagement practices that can build alternative and effective modes of communication for diverse populations and celebrates the rich cultural assets found in rural communities.
